What do my tongue and pulse tell you?

This is one of the most common questions that I am asked. In Chinese medicine, we look for ‘patterns of disharmony’. Which basically means we try to understand how your body, mind and/or spirit may be out of balance. While Western or allopathic medicine diagnose you using tests like blood work and MRIs, we use a variety of ancient methods to assess the balance of your body through evaluating your energetic organs. When our bodies are out of balance, it can show up as a variety of symptoms and signs. The way that your pulse feels and tongue looks are significant parts of that assessment.

The tongue doesn’t change quickly, with the most dramatic changes happening when you have some significant change in your health (huge improvements in lifestyle/diet or significant illness) but even then it takes some time before you will see it on the tongue.  The pulse ‘on the other hand’ (pun intended) can reveal that you skipped breakfast or perhaps had an argument just before your appointment. I feel the relative strengths and weaknesses in the pulse positions on both of your wrists and I look at the your tongue’s color, shape, coating, etc.  I may also apply pressure to one or more points or ask you to move… all of this information helps me to understand what may be out of balance.  Combined these help me determine how best to help you return to balance.
